CITIZENS FOR SCHOOLS IN TOWNS,
NOT A WHEATLAND SCHOOLS COMPLEX
For one or more of the reasons listed below, I oppose Loudoun County Public Schools' proposal to purchase the 170-acre Cangiano/Burgess site in Wheatland for a future 4,000-student, 3-school (elementary, middle and high school) complex:
- This site conflicts with the County Revised General Plan's clear intent to preserve and protect rural Loudoun and its farms.
- $67,058/acre ($11.4 million) is too expensive for this land, especially in the current real estate market and budget crisis we face.
- The size of the proposed complex is too large and will overwhelm the character of Wheatland forever and invite further sprawl.
- There is not enough groundwater to feed these schools AND neighboring farms & homes, and wastewater treatment will be EXPENSIVE.
- Moving these schools closer to the Town of Lovettsville will help small businesses, build Loudoun's commercial tax base, increase student and parent participation in after school activities, and offer students more opportunities to walk or bike to school, reducing traffic, pollution, and transportation costs.
- Citizens have had no say in school site selection criteria, and were excluded from the process of selecting this site.
At the public input meeting following our rally on May 4th, 2009, we delivered more than 1,200 petition signatures to the Board of Supervisors, all collected in only a month's time. If you haven't yet added your signature to our petition, please download a copy to fill in (ideally with a few of your neighbors' and friends' signatures as well) and then mail it to the address listed below. Thank you for your support!
